New SawStop Professional Cabinet Saw
I received my new Saw Stop PCS with 52" rails just in time for labor day weekend. It arrived in a large (and heavy) box, undamaged and arrived on the day and at the time promised. In addition to the big box were several smaller boxes containing the rails, extension table, and mobile base. Getting this monster to my basement took some planning, but strapping it to 2 furniture dollies and lowering it down the outside steps on 2 2x8's was the answer. I teathered the box to the towing ball on my SUV and gently lowered it down the steps inch by inch. It worked. As soon as you open the box there are unpacking instructions. I ignored them and could not lift the saw into place. Follow the instructions. They work. In order to lift the saw into verticle position I used a hydrulic floor jack to get it to about a 45 degree angle and then muscled it the rest of the way. Saw Stop has done an amazing job with the instructions and each piece of hardware is enclosed in a card that is numbered and color coded to the instructions. If you follow the instructions, assembly is efficient and fun. I needed my wife to help me install the cast iron wings. I could not hold their weight and line up the holes underneath. With me holding the wings she easily lined up the holes and hand tightened the bolts. Everything else was a one man job. I turned the saw on for the first time and was amazed at how quiet it is and the lack of any vibration. My first cut was crosscutting a 2x4. It was like cutting butter and the cut was absolutely smooth and at a perfect 90 degrees using the miter gauge right out of the box. Next was cross cutting some scrap rock maple 2x8's. Again, no problem. Same result. Then I ripped a pine 2x6, then a maple 2x8. Like butter. The fence is accurate out of the box, glides as if on air, and locks in without any slop. I really like the blade guard. It is unobtrusive, and really funnels saw dust through its dust port effectively. The quick change lever clamp to remove the guard and the tooless method of removing the insert are well thought out and execute perfectly. All controls work well and feel solid in your hands. The blade elevation and blade angle wheels are the smoothest I have ever used. The mobile base works well but I wish I had upgraded to the Industrial mobile base as all four casters swivel on the ICS base. I am fully satisfied so far. I have never used such a well made and solid table saw. What improvedments would I make? 1. Upgrade to the ICS mobile base as discussed above. 2. I would pay to upgrade the extension table to iron, steel or aluminum. There is nothing wrong with the current table, I am just not sure if it is up to my usual harsh treatment. 3. A longer power cord would be good especially if you are going to use the mobile base to push this monster to the middle of the shop floor. This is an easy DIY change though. That's it. What a great addition to my shop. I am sure I will be using this saw for the rest of my life and I plan to leave it to my son who can use it for another lifetime. Great job!!!
