Hermance Machine Company introduces a new helical cutterhead, designed to be a planer cutterhead, a moulder cutterhead, or a jointer cutterhead. Our unique design offers several important advantages over a spiral cutterhead. First, we not only turn the knives at an angle, but they are tilted as well. Many spiral heads have the knives strike the wood at a 90 degree angle. Only the Hermance heads cut with a true shearing action. The results are an incredibly smooth finish without needing special knives. There is almost no picking or tearout with this design. Second, we engineered our cutterhead to support the carbide insert knives on three sides to reduce blade chipping and cracking. Third, we aerodynamically configured the cutterhead to run more quietly than straight blade or any other spiral cutterhead. Preliminary tests have shown a 15-20Db reduction when run on an SCM Superset compared to a straight blade moulder head.

It does an excellent job surfacing all of the hardwoods that we sell. The finish on the harder species with irregular grain is superb. We could not achieve a finish without any tear out on a straight knife cutterhead as we are producing with the new helical. We are also pleased with the dramatically reduced noise that the new head makes in comparison to the straight knife head. I can plane Hickory and stand beside the machine and hold a conversation with another person, and we can actually hear each other. The sound reduction is truly a blessing.
I am also sure that it will pay for itself quickly in the cost savings that we will get due to a much longer run time between sharpenings. We have run several thousand board feet through and it is cutting as well as when the cutters were new.
